CHA Leverages Resultant’s Data Assessment to Save Over $2M Annually

As the national voice of more than 220 children’s hospitals, The Children’s Hospital Association (CHA) had a vision of advancing their data and analytics program with the goal of getting data to their customers faster. Dated data infrastructure meant CHA needed to take a step back to look at this initiative more holistically. Cloud migration was under consideration, but many stakeholders were concerned with security and compliance requirements. Building consensus and getting buy-in across the CHA organization would be challenging.

Our Approach

To assist CHA in developing a plan to implement an extensive data and analytics transformation, Resultant introduced the strategic data assessment (SDA) framework. The SDA framework is an approach to thoroughly understanding a client’s data challenges and systematically evaluating areas of the organization that will lead to a more impactful transformation.

Areas we cover in the SDA Framework include:

  • People and processes
  • Data models and structures
  • Data architecture and platforms
  • Visual analytics and reporting
  • Advanced analytics

The SDA framework and recommendations implemented helped CHA develop a comprehensive plan that would unite the entire organization around the vision and what the data transformation journey would entail.

The Solution

Upon completion of the evaluation, we provided a comprehensive presentation and detailed report to CHA’s data transformation initiative steering committee with these recommendations.

  • A new data warehouse: Moving CHA’s data warehouse to a different platform would enable them to scale quickly while still addressing security and compliance concerns.
  • New data architecture: CHA realized their legacy data structure was an obstacle to transformation. Restructuring data would ensure consistency across disparate data sources, creating new meta data elements and a mechanism to monitor and improve data quality.
  • Consolidation of visual analytics tools: Different CHA stakeholders used different visual analytics tools. Standardizing a go-forward visual analytics platform would reduce both overall spend and support complexities.
  • Comprehensive roadmap: Understanding CHA’s objectives and constraints on their organization, we worked with them to co-develop a comprehensive road map, project plan, and budget. This enabled CHA to gain consensus across the organization, articulate success criteria with quick wins, and outline a feasible multi-year investment schedule.
