WhereScape/Resultant Partnership Boosts Capacity for Healthcare Organization’s Data Team

The director of data architecture and engineering for a large, nonprofit healthcare organization had a problem they wanted to solve: their talented team of data architects and engineers spent a great deal of time and effort manually writing the ETL necessary to add new data sources into their data pipeline. This process ultimately helps provide insights the organization uses to improve operations and patient care. While the data team was fully capable of the manual coding, the director knew improving the team’s efficiency would increase capacity across the entire organization.

The manual ETL process for getting new data sources into the organization’s existing Data Vault took a great deal of time and effort, was rather unwieldy, and proved difficult to scale.

Automated processes increase capacity

The team began exploring various low-code automation tools to sustain speed to value and shorten turnaround time. An impending merger with another healthcare system provided timely motivation.

They needed a robust data solution and were impressed with WhereScape’s capabilities and potential to increase their data architecture team’s efficiency. When they sought a reliable implementation partner to ensure success, WhereScape recommended Resultant.

About the client

This large, nonprofit health care integrated delivery organization serves patients in urban, suburban and rural communities through hospitals and multiple community health locations, providing care ranging from inpatient to outpatient, home to workplace, and maternity to hospice.

Outcomes

Our work implementing WhereScape with the large, nonprofit health care organization brought these outcomes.

  • Accelerated Time-to-Insight: Reducing the time required to integrate new data domains brings faster access to critical business insights.
  • Improved Operational Efficiency: Automating manual tasks and streamlining data workflows brings greater bandwidth to the client’s internal data team.
  • Enhanced Data Quality: Structured approach to data management ensures and simplifies compliance with regulatory requirements and improves overall data quality.

Implementation

A collaborative approach for confident results

We approached the implementation in three phases, with each phase bringing designated data domains into the pipeline over a two-month period. Each phase included training and increased the hands-on activities of the organization’s internal data team to make them self-sufficient.

Phase 1: Player

Resultant led all implementation activities

Phase 2: Player + Coach

Resultant guided and mentored healthcare organization team members while also engaging in hands-on implementation.

Phase 3: Coach

The organization’s team took over implementation under Resultant’s oversight, mentoring, and strategic guidance.

Throughout the implementation process, close collaboration between both Resultant’s and the organization’s teams ensured alignment on the scope of data domains and their priority order for completion.

Agile Implementation for Data Domains

By adopting an agile approach and breaking down the implementation into manageable sprints, we ensured flexibility, adaptability, and rapid value delivery. The key activities within each sprint included:

  • Discovery and Planning: Define the scope and requirements of the data domain.
  • Implementation: Develop and configure the data domain.
  • Deployment: Test and validate the implemented data domain to ensure functionality and performance.
  • Training: Conduct training sessions for data architects and analysts and provide guidance on best practices and troubleshooting.
  • Transition and Handover: Transition of ownership from the Resultant team to the healthcare organization’s team.

Resultant is a bigger firm; they’re scaled. There’s depth to the bench. We got the right people and it was managed well.

Outcomes

Resultant’s work has helped this integrated healthcare delivery organization streamline their data infrastructure to accelerate their analytics initiatives. With the Resultant-led implementation of WhereScape in place, they can more efficiently manage and integrate diverse data domains, facilitating informed decision-making across the organization.

WhereScape’s structured approach to data management reduces manual efforts and improves data quality, resulting in more accurate and actionable insights.

  • Accelerated Time-to-Insight: WhereScape implementation reduces the time required to onboard new data domains, enabling faster access to critical business insights.
  • Improved Operational Efficiency: Automating manual tasks and streamlining data workflows increases operational efficiency, bringing greater bandwidth to the internal data team. Additionally, faster processing and loading times lead to more efficient day-to-day operations.
  • Enhanced Data Quality: This structured approach to data management ensures and simplifies compliance with regulatory requirements and improves overall data quality.

This organization was much farther in their data journey than many who take on a data warehouse project and, as such, had a more complex, involved implementation. Resultant has a strong track record managing such implementations. Making this infrastructure change has addressed the company’s immediate needs and laid the foundation for easier future implementation of additional data sources in time for the upcoming merger. The internal team is confidently positioned for long-term success, enabling continued growth and innovation and optimization of their data assets.
