Dr. Borek spent two decades in the public sector working on issues related to education reform and educator effectiveness. He began his career as a teacher in Massachusetts before teaching overseas at an American-curriculum school in Morocco, where he served on a committee that established standards and benchmarks for American-curriculum schools worldwide.

Dr. Borek worked for the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Nevada Department of Education, directing an alternative certification program for administrators, developing successful responses to the Race to the Top and Teacher Incentive Fund grant programs, building large-scale implementation and evaluation plans, and leading state-level work related to educator preparation and development.

He’s worked in teacher preparation programs at Boston College and the University of Illinois in addition to launching the Nevada Institute on Teaching and Educator Preparation at UNLV. He has presented and written on topics ranging from alternative certification to assessment literacy to teacher leadership models and career ladders.

Dr. Borek believes the world of education reform needs people with a deep understanding of what has and has not worked in the past to be meaningful partners for state agencies. The education world is notorious for chasing fads, and expertise is the secret weapon that can help states to find meaningful improvements that have eluded the field for so long.
