Partnering with Purpose: A Transformative Approach to Client Relationships

Defining “Partnering with Purpose”

In the high-paced world of professional services and business intelligence, we often hear terms like “partnering with purpose” tossed around. At Resultant, it’s more than just a phrase in our mission and values—it’s a philosophy we live by in our client interactions. But what does it truly mean to partner with purpose? Let me share a recent experience that encapsulates this concept and shows why this philosophy matters deeply to me.

The Initial Client Interaction

Recently, I was introduced to a prospective client based in Indianapolis. He had been tasked by his CFO to find a vendor to create a data warehouse. He had familiarity with Resultant’s technical skills in this type of project and recognized that we could be a good provider for his team.

This led him to reach out to us with a technical ask: “Can you help me build a data warehouse?”

We deliver data warehouse solutions to our clients daily, so it could have been a simple technology-centric response.

Asking “Why” Before Taking Action

But instead of jumping in with a ready-made technology fix, we paused and asked, “Why?” Why was there a need for a data warehouse? Why and how would their business benefit from a data-centric solution? Why was the CFO and senior leadership desiring a data warehouse?

If we’re going to be a partner with purpose, understanding the desired outcomes is crucial to realize maximum effort for projects like this, and our “Why?” questions enabled us to get to the root of the problem.

Turning Conversations into Strategic Explorations

This simple question opened a dialogue, transforming the prospect’s view on the project. Our conversation shifted from a technical discussion to a strategic exploration of the impact his team can have on the business. By examining the business objectives and digging into the associated key performance indicators (KPIs), we could get to the heart of the matter: how can the organization be most impactfully changed through these insights?

Delivering Targeted Solutions, Not Just Technology

By engaging with these critical “why” questions, we avoided the common pitfall of building technology for technology’s sake. Instead, we focused on designing a targeted solution that delivers genuine business value. It’s not just about constructing a data warehouse; it’s about furthering the organization, achieving their mission, enhancing decision-making, creating operational efficiency, and improving the employee experience. Resultant’s aim isn’t limited to bigger projects or specific technologies—it’s to tangibly drive the client’s business forward.

The Bigger Picture: Driving Tangible Outcomes

Taking this stance might sometimes result in a smaller project for us, but if it delivers substantial progress for the client, it serves a greater purpose. Being a partner with purpose means diving into the client’s world, understanding it, and then providing the technology or strategy that truly propels them toward their goals.

In a world where building data platforms has become routine, tangible outcomes can often get lost amidst the activity. My opinion, which has been shaped by experiences like those described, is that result-oriented partnerships require more than just delivering technology products. You have to truly impact client operations and ensure they get value where it counts. Technology is sometimes part of the answer, but it is rarely the complete solution.

Conclusion: A Call to Action for Professional Services Leaders

Professional services leaders, the key takeaway here is to always seek the “why” before conjuring the “how.”

Our role is to help our clients thrive and asking “why” ensures that we solve impactful problems to enhance their experience. If we instead jump straight to “how” and immediately try solving a problem with a preferred technology, we may be putting good effort towards the wrong objective.

Final Thoughts: Creating a Lasting Impact

Partnering with purpose is about leaving a lasting impact and helping businesses not just survive but thrive. By fostering authentic partnerships based on mutual understanding and strategic implementation, we’re set to change the business landscape, one purposeful project at a time.
